OUR PROGRAMS Established in 1982, the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of San Bernardino has made a lasting difference in the lives of children in the surrounding communities. The RiteCare Childhood Language Center provides life-changing speech, language, and literacy treatment of childhood language disorders free of charge. Services are provided to children ranging from 3 to 12 years of age. The National Center for Learning Disabilities reports that one in five children have learning disabilities requiring the services of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. These children often suffer deeply from low self-esteem and low self-confidence. Early intervention is essential to mitigating persistent, long term social , emotional and academic challenges. Speech therapy provided by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists is vitally important to children who struggle daily with the task of speaking clearly and communicating. Many of these children become used to being teased, ignored, or even scolded when they want to say something and just can’t. Unfortunately, countless children are inappropriately socially promoted from one grade level to the next and suffer from extremely low self-confidence and have difficulty succeeding academically. SPEECH Speech is how words and sounds are produced and include the following: Articulation is how clearly we say sounds. Some children cannot say the /r/ or /l/ sound and need help to improve their articulation skills. Fluency is the flow, smoothness, and rate of speech. A disfluency is a break in the flow of speech, which is common for everyone. Stuttering occurs when there are more breaks or dysfluencies than is typical. Voice is how we use our breath and our vocal folds to produce sound. The quality of child’s voice can become harsh if there is over-use from shouting, vocal pitch can be too high or too low, and voices can be too soft or too loud. At the RiteCare Childhood Language Center we offer a variety of intervention models to assist children in the development of their speech skills. A majority of the time, children are seen in one-on-one intensive therapy sessions year-round. When appropriate, children may participate in small group therapy sessions to help generalize skills to new and more challenging settings. All speech therapy programs are individualized. Sessions are conducted by our licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Speech therapy can improve the correct production of sounds, improve the flow of speech, and improve vocal quality and pitch. We can help your child gain the skills they need to be a success in school and beyond. LANGUAGE Language is how we use words to form ideas and then share them. Language is expressive , sharing thoughts and ideas. Language is receptive , understanding what others say. Language is semantics , what words mean. Some words have more than one meaning. Language is syntax , putting words in the correct order. Language is morphology , changing word meaning by adding sounds (i.e. “eat- eats- eating” or “done-undone-redone”). Language is social . We all need to know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it to be socially appropriate. All language therapy programs are individualized. Sessions are conducted by our licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Language therapy can improve your child’s expressive language, so they can express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings and become an effective communicator. Language therapy can also improve your child’s receptive language skills so they can better understand instructions at home, in the classroom, and during extracurricular activities and enjoy success in all areas of life. LITERACY Literacy is the ability to read and write. Reading is a multifaceted process to make meaning from print. Writing is the process of generating text. The following skills are required for successful reading and writing: Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words. Understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of discrete sounds. Phonics instruction teaches children that specific sounds belong to specific letters or specific letter patterns. Reading fluency is the ability to read with consistent speed, accuracy, and expression. Children read fluently when they are able to recognize words automatically and are no longer focused on how to read. Vocabulary is knowledge of words and their meaning. A strong vocabulary assists with reading comprehension. Reading Comprehension is the ability for a child to understand what they have read as well as to understand what they have written. Spelling is the forming of words from letters according to accepted rules. Learning to spell and learning to read rely on the same underlying knowledge (i.e. relationships between letters and sounds). Their challenges may range from a mild articulation delay, severe expressive and/or receptive language difficulty to deficits in literacy. Some of these children have difficulty understanding or remembering what is said to them. Others may understand, but cannot easily express their own wishes and thoughts clearly. The effects of these deficits can be devastating emotionally, socially and academically to children and their families if the problem is not treated at an early age. THERAPY SESSION DETAILS Individual 50-minute therapy sessions are scheduled on a once-weekly basis. Intervention is ongoing and year-round for up to 18 months as determined to be appropriate to meet a child’s needs. Summer-only sessions are not available. Please refer to the FAQ’s section for stepped out information on the application process. DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT The Evaluation Process Evaluation At the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Sacramento, information about a child's skills and abilities is obtained through formal evaluation, observation and review of submitted assessments and reports. An evaluation allows the determination of strengths and weaknesses in oral language (understanding and expression), pre-reading and reading, and written language skills. Observations of strategies utilized by the child during the testing process are an integral component of the evaluation process. Age and grade equivalencies as well as standard scores and percentile rankings are reported when available. Therapy A child's therapy goals are developed based on our clinical team’s experience in a variety of settings, current research and application of techniques and strategies from a myriad of resources. Remediation within skill areas includes the utilization of strengths to support areas that are relatively weak for the child. The Center’s approach to therapy includes input in various modalities of learning (e.g. visual-auditory-kinesthetic-tactile), and teaches the child to use his/her preferred mode with the support of other areas. We address language skills including listening and identifying important information, organizing academic information, expressing thoughts and ideas through appropriate word usage and description, narrative language, and responding to higher-level material which is utilized within the academic environment. Preschool language skills primarily address receptive/expressive language, early/basic concept development and pre-literacy. A structured multi-sensory approach is utilized in the instruction of reading and spelling. Intervention is individualized to address the student’s specific areas of need using a Structured Literacy approach. Our Sacramento language therapists work with students and their family members to demystify the areas of difficulty in order to reduce frustration. Research shows that when students learn to understand their challenges in light of their strengths, remedial programs are far more beneficial to them. FAQs NEWS/UPDATES Stacey Strong Laura Rizzi Thanks to the generosity of our donors we were able to add on the Ready-Set-Read summer program, which took place over four weeks in July 2024. Tailored for wait-listed clients, this intensive program focused on delivering targeted language and literacy support to students in grades 3-6 facing challenges such as dyslexia, language processing disorders, and attention deficit issues. Participants engaged in daily 3-hour sessions, totaling 36 hours of specialized instruction. In small group settings, students received personalized attention to support literacy goals while boosting self-esteem through team building activities. The positive reactions from the children and the heartfelt praise from their parents reflect the program’s success. Post-assessment results further confirm the significant progress made. One parent, whose 5th-grade daughter struggled with reading despite a strong academic drive, expressed profound gratitude, highlighting how impactful our efforts have been. Our Early Intervention Intensive for younger students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd, also achieved great results, addressing delays in motor speech and foundational reading skills. Over 24 hours of specialized instruction, students with Apraxia of Speech benefited from engaging, play-based activities that fostered essential socialization and literacy skills. Both programs have generated remarkable enthusiasm and progress among participants and clinicians alike. We are thrilled with the outcomes of this program and look forward to building on its success to further enhance our support for our clients’ literacy journeys. Camp Chit Chat Camp Chit Chat is a fun and socially interactive camp for children aged 3 ½ to 6 years old with mild-moderate speech and language delays. It’s a great way for children to keep up with essential communication skills during the summer when regular therapy services are not offered. Each camp participant will be placed in a small group (2-3 children) with same-aged peers also working on similar skills such as articulation, language, fluency, and social communication. Not every child that applies for camp will have the opportunity to be enrolled. We look at each child individually to make sure he or she will benefit from our program. Camp Chit Chat Schedule: Children will attend one 60-minute session per week with one to two other children. Camp Chit Chat Curriculum: Our weekly themes transform our center into a wonderful setting for your child to develop his/her imagination while working on speech, language, social, cognitive, and motor skills. We also target early literacy skills and early handwriting skills during camp. Each weekly session builds upon the previous session and focuses on helping each child in acquiring a foundation of the following communication skills: improved articulation due to speech delays such as apraxia and phonological delays, social communication with peers and staff, receptive language skills (questions, vocabulary, concepts, grammar) expressive language skills (sentence length, vocabulary, categories, grammar, questions) and fluency of speaking. Camp Chit Chat Fiesta: Camp Chit Chat concludes with a Fiesta at a local park as a chance for the staff, children and families to celebrate all the hard work and achievements that were made over the summer. This is a great time to get to know other families attending camp and an opportunity to set up playdates! Enrollment: begins early March 2026 INTAKE PROCEDURE Children must be between 2 ½ and 5 years old in order to be put onto the waitlist. Children must be fully immunized according to age and doctor. Once your child enters Kindergarten, he or she is no longer eligible to receive our private speech and language services. Children receiving speech and language therapy from more than one source (speech therapist, private therapist, special day class) will not be eligible for our program. While we do not take on clients who are receiving multiple services at the time of enrollment, we highly encourage you to seek other services for your child while he or she is on the waitlist. If you are interested in enrolling your child for therapy at our center, please call our office or complete a brief intake form in the section above. One of our therapists will give you a call to schedule a screening within the month. This screening will determine your child’s priority level on our waiting list. IEP's & SCHOOL THERAPY SERVICES If your child is currently receiving weekly speech and language therapy services through their school or another state agency/program, a copy of their current records, IEP and most recent evaluation will be requested by our center. After a thorough review of the specific records by one of our staff therapists, parents will be contacted to discuss and determine the next step in the screening and evaluation process for your child. We will also work closely with your child’s school or agency therapist in order to provide a well-rounded therapy program. Screenings and Evaluations Once your child is placed on our screening waitlist, we will contact you within about a month’s time in order to set an appointment at the Language Center. This evaluation appointment will take place with one of our licensed Speech-Language Pathologists and determine his or her place on our waitlist based on need. A thorough assessment of your child’s current speech and language skills will be completed in order to determine his/her current levels of communicative abilities. Background information, medical history, educational services, parent interviews, and testing will be conducted in order to identify the specific needs of your child. This process serves a dual purpose in determining not only if your child requires treatment but more importantly, it guides the therapist in determining the specific goals and course of your child’s therapy. Our clinicians are dedicated to providing a highly individualized therapy program to each child at our center. OUR PROGRAMS In operation since 1984, the center is a philanthropy of the Scottish Rite, a concordant body of the Freemasons. One of 170 RiteCare Centers across the U.S., our Center is located in downtown Santa Barbara on the 4th floor of the Masonic Center. Improving your child’s speech and language communication is our ultimate goal and it all starts with providing individual therapy services each week. This type of therapy is a vital element of your child’s weekly program and allows your child maximum opportunity to work on his/her communication goals. More importantly, it provides parents all the tools and essentials necessary for carrying out the skills learned in therapy each week. Each of our therapy sessions is also dedicated to speaking with parents and demonstrating specific strategies that are crucial to each child’s progress. Parents will be provided an opportunity to sit in on each session with their child or to observe through a two-way mirror and listen in on their child’s session through a speaker system. In either case, we encourage parent involvement in order to ensure steady progress and success. — Parent of Private Therapy Client You Can Make a Difference! “I am so thankful for Scottish Rite and the work that they do for children that need help with speech. We do not receive any state or federal funding. View terms of use OUR PROGRAMS Since the RiteCare® Childhood Language Center of Orange County in Santa Ana opened its doors in 2001, countless families have found a family-focused environment where their children learn to improve their communication skills and build self-confidence. The Center provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to children from 2 to 16 years of age who exhibit a wide range of speech, language and learning challenges. Located in Santa Ana, the Center also provides intern opportunities for students from Chapman University who are pursuing a career in speech and language pathology. The RiteCare® Childhood Language Center of Orange County is a program of the California Scottish Rite Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation. Under the leadership of our Advisory Council and the staff at Chapman University , we assess the needs of children with speech and language disorders and provide the necessary treatment. If you can imagine a day without the ability to speak, you can imagine the need we serve. Some children need to overcome particular challenges, others simply need to learn the mechanics of speech. At the Center, we assess their needs and develop a plan for success. Nothing is more uplifting than seeing a child communicate with their family for the first time, or more satisfying than knowing the happiness that comes from a child’s first “Hi, Dad” or “I love you, Mom.” SPEECH Speech is how words and sounds are produced and include the following: Articulation is how clearly we say sounds. Sessions are conducted by graduate level student interns from Chapman University who are supervised by licensed and certified speech/language pathologists. Sessions are conducted by graduate level student interns from Chapman University who are supervised by licensed and certified speech/language pathologists. - Suzanne Friendly and supportive You Can Make a Difference! Jim has a great approach with children. He engages with my daughter in a way that challenges and stimulates her, gently prompting her to practice new skills in a friendly and supportive environment. With feedback from Jim, we have learned better strategies for handling our daughter's communication challenges." View terms of use OUR PROGRAMS Established in 1992, the Pasadena RiteCare Childhood Language Center, in partnership with Pasadena City College , provides services to children 18 months to 18 years of age. There are no geographical restrictions, however our focus is on Pasadena and surrounding communities. We do not provide long-term services to children who are already receiving therapy, who are eligible for intensive special education services through the public schools, or who have a primary diagnosis other than specific language impairment. PHILOSOPHY We are committed to providing quality services to young children with speech and language disorders. Our primary goals are 1) early identification and treatment of language disorders and 2) facilitating family involvement in this process. We believe early intervention can help prevent a speech and language disorder from developing into a lifelong handicap. In addition, it can help curtail the development of secondary language delays such as behavior, emotional, and learning problems. Families are involved in every stage of treatment. Through observations of therapy sessions and discussing intervention with the therapist, parents learn how to promote speech and language skills during daily interactions. Therapy is conducted within the context of developmentally appropriate activities such as playing with toys, sharing books, and using computers. This makes therapy fun and motivating for the child. SERVICES PROVIDED Speech-Language Clinic Services: Diagnostic Evaluations A Speech-Language Pathologist will gather background information, observe, and test, your child’s strengths and needs in speech and language, and recommend an appropriate course of treatment.
