For most children speech and language skills develop naturally from interaction with parents, siblings, and others in their environment. From an infant’s first smile to a two-year old's first sentence, these developmental milestones lay the foundation for successful communication throughout their lives. However, many children have difficulty learning because of underlying communication delays or disorders. The Department of Education estimates that 5% of children in the U.S.A. suffer from some sort of communication impairment. Communication delays and disorders fall into one or more of the four basic areas of development: Processing or understanding sounds and spoken words Blending like sounds together in the correct sequence to be understood Because language is essential for communication, learning, social adjustment, and emotional stability, impairment may lead to difficulty with everyday activities. The earlier these difficulties are identified, the sooner appropriate intervention can begin. Her parents were at a loss—unsure of what came next or how to help her navigate a new world of silence. You can do whatever you want in life.” Kylie believed her. And so did her parents. From Summer Camp Student to Youth Advocate Kylie Anderson was just 7 years old when she lost her hearing due to Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome (EVA). She faced a world that suddenly became silent—and yet, she chose to speak up. Thanks to the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Stockton , Kylie received the specialized therapy she needed to adjust to her cochlear implants, rebuild her speech, and find her voice again. Scholarships In the last 30 years we have given more than 6 million dollars in college scholarships to more than 2,800 deserving students to assist with the pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree. The California Scottish Rite Foundation places a strong emphasis on education and scholarships are provided for degrees in many fields including engineering, foreign service, forestry, medicine, public school administration, public service, and speech and language pathology. The Foundation provides scholarships to fully accredited Colleges or Universities nationwide through several primary scholarship funds including; the Baldwin Scholarship, Ruppert Scholarship, and the William F. Stovall Scholarship . Applicants must be California residents, have a 3.0 GPA, and be planning on enrolling full-time according to their school program. Beyond that, each of our scholarships have more specific requirements. The William F Stovall Scholarship and the Baldwin Scholarship support students pursuing a Master or Doctorate Degree in a field of public service such as Public-School Administration, Speech Language Pathology, Public Administration, Special Education, etc. The Ruppert Scholarship supports students pursuing an undergraduate degree in either medicine, engineering, forestry, or public-school administration. The Scottish Rite Valleys of Santa Rosa, Burlingame, Coachella Valley, and Sacramento are all offering scholarships to undergraduate students who reside in their local communities. The Scottish Rite Valleys of Orange County and San Francisco are offering scholarships to the family members and/or friends of their local masonic members. Our Programs The RiteCare Childhood Language Center of San Jose provides comprehensive evaluation and therapy services for speech and language delays and disorders of children ages 2 -13 years of age who live in the Bay Area and surrounding communities. All diagnostic and therapy services are provided by nationally certified and state licensed Speech-Language Pathologists. Diagnostic evaluations determine the course of treatment and direct an individualized plan of care specific to the needs of the child. Our Speech-Language Pathologists obtain information about a child’s skills and abilities within the areas of receptive and expressive language, articulation/phonology, voice, fluency, oral motor development, and pragmatics/social communication using a variety of diagnostic tools. The assessment assists in formulating a plan of care that is specific to the needs of the child and follows evidence-based practices based on research within the field of communication disorders. Therapy is either in-person, Telehealth, or a combination of both and may be provided in individual treatment sessions or in a small group depending on the specific needs of the child. Frequency of therapy is typically one to two times per week. Our Speech-Language Pathologists work closely with the child’s family to provide carryover of therapy interventions at home to ensure the best outcome of the child’s speech and language development. In some cases, the Speech-Language Pathologist works with the child’s pediatrician or other medical professionals, teachers, and other rehab staff to assist with carryover of therapy goals or to make recommendations for other referrals to further assist the child and their family. Reading is a multifaceted process to make meaning from print. Writing is the process of generating text. The following skills are required for successful reading and writing: Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words. Understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of discrete sounds. Phonics instruction teaches children that specific sounds belong to specific letters or specific letter patterns. Reading fluency is the ability to read with consistent speed, accuracy, and expression. Children read fluently when they are able to recognize words automatically and are no longer focused on how to read. Vocabulary is knowledge of words and their meaning. A strong vocabulary assists with reading comprehension. Reading Comprehension is the ability for a child to understand what they have read as well as to understand what they have written. Spelling is the forming of words from letters according to accepted rules. DOWNLOAD FORM San Jose RiteCare Center Director Rachel R. Sense, M.A., CCC-SLP Rachel R. Sense, M.A., CCC-SLP, has practiced at the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of San Jose since 2007. She received her Master’s in Communication Disorders from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, in 2005 and completed her fellowship in Boston, MA, at a pediatric outpatient hospital facility. Rachel has experience working in hospitals, elementary schools, and private practice settings. She specializes in early child language development, motor speech disorders, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, cleft palate, stuttering, and social thinking therapies. Rachel has worked with San Jose State University’s Communication Disorder’s graduate program, offering supervision and mentorship for graduate students. Recently, she received the ACE award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for her dedication to continuing education. Rachel loves working with children because their joy is infectious. And she loves her job because she is constantly learning new and creative ways to help the kids she feels so blessed to work with at the Scottish Rite. Rachel enjoys working closely with families to foster the best learning outcomes for their children using evidence-based practices, and of course, lots of fun during therapy sessions! Seeing kids learn to communicate with their families and friends is the most rewarding experience. Rachel carries her Clinical Competence Certification with the American Speech-Langauge-Hearing Association, as well as licensure with the State of California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. San Jose RiteCare Center Clinician Angela Stephan, M.S., CCC-SLP Angela Stephan has been working as a pediatric speech-language pathologist for 21 years. Angela has experience working in hospitals, home based early intervention, private practice, and her favorite – outpatient clinical settings. Angela worked for the Rite Care Childhood Language Center of San Jose for 11 years before moving from San Jose, back to her home state of Kentucky. She was elated when the opportunity to re-join the Rite Care Center was presented through the option of telehealth services in 2020. Some of Angela’s favorite areas of practice include social pragmatic language, speech sound disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, language development and working alongside children on the autism spectrum. Angela has worked in conjunction with other therapists to provide social language groups and speech sound disorders groups. Over the course of her career Angela has had the opportunity to complete various continuing education courses and considers herself a lover of life-long learning. Working with children of all ages and their families has been a great source of happiness and meaning for Angela. The Rite Care clinic has provided Angela with the support to focus on the children and their needs, because treatment decisions are based on a collaboration between the therapist and the family. Angela holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and is licensed to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the states of California and Kentucky. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, taking walks, reading, yoga and baking gluten free treats for herself and others. San Jose RiteCare Center Clinician Jennifer Baird, M.A., CCC-SLP Jen has worked in the field of speech-language pathology for 20 years. She attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where she received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Communicative Disorders. She has a passion for working with children and their families. Jen has extensive experience working with children from birth to 3 years by providing comprehensive eligibility assessments and therapeutic and family coaching services in the home, clinic and community locations in partnership with the local regional center. She has worked with children of all ages in a variety of settings including preschools, private clinics, homes, elementary schools and outpatient clinics. Jen believes the child’s parents/caregivers are the true expert in their child’s development and she feels that connecting with families at the young ages sets a strong path for success when families are an integral part of therapy services. Jen has her Clinical Competence Certification with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, as well as licensure with the State of California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Jen is married with three children and has lived in San Jose since 2003. She enjoys reading, baking, spending time with her family and watching her children play their favorite sports including basketball, volleyball, and golf. She also spends much of her free time in activities with her daughter, as a member of the National Charity League, a mother and daughter program that promotes leadership and philanthropy in our local community. Jen joined the San Jose team in August of 2024. She is proud to be a part of Rite Care’s community, and she believes strongly in the mission and vision of the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Program. TEAM FAQs What do I do if I suspect my child has a speech or language problem? Contact our clinic and discuss your concerns to see if your child requires an initial screening and further evaluation for services. How much do services cost and do you accept insurance? Speech and language services at the RiteCare Clinic are free of charge. Services are funded by the San Jose Scottish Rite and through donations. Families are welcome to donate to the clinic. What types of services do you offer? We offer treatment both in person and online. Treatment visits are offered individually and in small groups when recommended. Do you perform assessments? Once your child has been placed with a regular treatment time, their therapist will perform an assessment of their speech and language to assist in formulating a plan of care. If your child has recently been assessed elsewhere, you are welcome to provide that information to better assist the therapist. What is your intake process? After contacting the clinic and providing a brief description of concerns, your child will be scheduled for a screening. At this time the therapist will speak with parents and provide feedback regarding potential therapeutic treatment. If treatment is recommended, your child will be placed on the waitlist until a regular treatment appointment time becomes available. Waitlist time varies based on your family’s availability. What does therapy look like? We approach therapy in a variety of ways depending on the needs of your child. Play based treatment is typically used for younger children. We may incorporate games, movement, iPads, and a variety of strategies to get the best results for your child. The RiteCare Clinic is a non-profit center funded through donations. Your tax-deductible donation will go towards clinic resources, supplies, and toys. New or lightly used toys and books are also appreciated. What age ranges do you treat? Children 2-13 years old are eligible for speech services. How many times per week will my child receive services? Children can receive speech therapy 1-2 times per week. How can I help as a parent? You have already taken the first step by finding out more about your child’s development so that you can continue to advocate for your child. It is also beneficial to read to your child, play games, and verbally interact with your child daily. Be sure to communicate with your child’s daycare provider, teacher, therapist, or other service provider for more direction. Some children cannot say the /r/ or /l/ sound and need help to improve their articulation skills. Fluency is the flow, smoothness, and rate of speech. A disfluency is a break in the flow of speech, which is common for everyone. Stuttering occurs when there are more breaks or dysfluencies than is typical. Voice is how we use our breath and our vocal folds to produce sound. The quality of child’s voice can become harsh if there is over-use from shouting, vocal pitch can be too high or too low, and voices can be too soft or too loud. At the RiteCare Childhood Language Center we offer a variety of intervention models to assist children in the development of their speech skills. A majority of the time, children are seen in one-on-one intensive therapy sessions year-round. When appropriate, children may participate in small group therapy sessions to help generalize skills to new and more challenging settings. All speech therapy programs are individualized. Sessions are conducted by our licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Speech therapy can improve the correct production of sounds, improve the flow of speech, and improve vocal quality and pitch. We can help your child gain the skills they need to be a success in school and beyond. LANGUAGE Language is how we use words to form ideas and then share them. Language is expressive , sharing thoughts and ideas. Language is receptive , understanding what others say. Language is semantics , what words mean. Some words have more than one meaning. Language is syntax , putting words in the correct order. Language is morphology , changing word meaning by adding sounds (i.e. “eat- eats- eating” or “done-undone-redone”). Language is social . We all need to know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it to be socially appropriate. All language therapy programs are individualized. Learning to spell and learning to read rely on the same underlying knowledge (i.e. relationships between letters and sounds). ENROLLMENT The Clinic enrolls clients for speech-language therapy according to the university calendar for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Therapy sessions are scheduled for 45 minutes 1-2 times per week: Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday. All new clients to the clinic must complete an online clinic application form Clinic Application . You only need to fill out the application form once. Our Programs The RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Bakersfield, opened in 2022. Since opening, we have provided services to many children in the Bakersfield area. Our services are provided by licensed, board-certified speech-language pathologists. Speech-language pathology evaluations and therapy are provided for a variety of communication disorders. Each child who is accepted into our program receives up to $7,000 in services and all treatment is offered to families free of charge. SERVICES PROVIDED Complete diagnostic speech-language evaluations One-on-one or small group therapy sessions Session observation and home activities for parents Disorders Evaluated and Treated Articulation – errors in the production of speech sounds, the child may substitute, delete, add, or change sounds (saying “wabbit” for “rabbit” or a lisp). Phonology – patterns of sound errors, the child may delete one sound from a consonant cluster (saying “poon” for “spoon” and “back” for “black” or substitute all sounds made in the back of the mouth for those in the front of the mouth (saying “tup” for “cup”). Stuttering – disruptions in the fluency of speech, the child may use repetitions of words, parts of words, or prolongations of sounds. Childhood Apraxia of Speech – motor speech disorder, the child knows what he/she wants to say, but his/her brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements needed, the child has problems saying sounds, syllables, and words. Expressive Language – difficulty using spoken language to express thoughts, the child may have trouble naming objects/pictures, putting words into sentences, having conversations, or using proper grammar. Receptive Language – difficulty understanding what is said, the child may have trouble following directions, understanding questions, or identifying objects/pictures. Social Language – difficulty using language in social contexts, the child may need help navigating social interactions in ways that are appropriate and comfortable. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – use of a communication method in addition to, or instead of, spoken language to communicate. OUR PROGRAMS Established in 1982, the RiteCare Childhood Language Center of San Bernardino has made a lasting difference in the lives of children in the surrounding communities. The RiteCare Childhood Language Center provides life-changing speech, language, and literacy treatment of childhood language disorders free of charge. Services are provided to children ranging from 3 to 12 years of age. The National Center for Learning Disabilities reports that one in five children have learning disabilities requiring the services of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. These children often suffer deeply from low self-esteem and low self-confidence. Early intervention is essential to mitigating persistent, long term social , emotional and academic challenges. Speech therapy provided by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists is vitally important to children who struggle daily with the task of speaking clearly and communicating. Many of these children become used to being teased, ignored, or even scolded when they want to say something and just can’t. Unfortunately, countless children are inappropriately socially promoted from one grade level to the next and suffer from extremely low self-confidence and have difficulty succeeding academically. SPEECH Speech is how words and sounds are produced and include the following: Articulation is how clearly we say sounds. Some children cannot say the /r/ or /l/ sound and need help to improve their articulation skills. Fluency is the flow, smoothness, and rate of speech. A disfluency is a break in the flow of speech, which is common for everyone. Stuttering occurs when there are more breaks or dysfluencies than is typical. Voice is how we use our breath and our vocal folds to produce sound. The quality of child’s voice can become harsh if there is over-use from shouting, vocal pitch can be too high or too low, and voices can be too soft or too loud. At the RiteCare Childhood Language Center we offer a variety of intervention models to assist children in the development of their speech skills. A majority of the time, children are seen in one-on-one intensive therapy sessions year-round. When appropriate, children may participate in small group therapy sessions to help generalize skills to new and more challenging settings. All speech therapy programs are individualized. Sessions are conducted by our licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Speech therapy can improve the correct production of sounds, improve the flow of speech, and improve vocal quality and pitch. We can help your child gain the skills they need to be a success in school and beyond. LANGUAGE Language is how we use words to form ideas and then share them. Language is expressive , sharing thoughts and ideas. Language is receptive , understanding what others say. Language is semantics , what words mean. Some words have more than one meaning. Language is syntax , putting words in the correct order. Language is morphology , changing word meaning by adding sounds (i.e. “eat- eats- eating” or “done-undone-redone”). Language is social . We all need to know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it to be socially appropriate. All language therapy programs are individualized. Sessions are conducted by our licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Language therapy can improve your child’s expressive language, so they can express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings and become an effective communicator. Language therapy can also improve your child’s receptive language skills so they can better understand instructions at home, in the classroom, and during extracurricular activities and enjoy success in all areas of life. LITERACY Literacy is the ability to read and write. Reading is a multifaceted process to make meaning from print. Writing is the process of generating text. The following skills are required for successful reading and writing: Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words. Understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of discrete sounds. Phonics instruction teaches children that specific sounds belong to specific letters or specific letter patterns. Reading fluency is the ability to read with consistent speed, accuracy, and expression. Children read fluently when they are able to recognize words automatically and are no longer focused on how to read. Vocabulary is knowledge of words and their meaning. A strong vocabulary assists with reading comprehension. Reading Comprehension is the ability for a child to understand what they have read as well as to understand what they have written. Spelling is the forming of words from letters according to accepted rules. Learning to spell and learning to read rely on the same underlying knowledge (i.e. relationships between letters and sounds). Acquiring these services can be life-changing, providing a renewed sense of self confidence, and the ability to communicate that many take for granted. All of the above is provided at NO COST to the children we serve or their families. ABOUT The RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Santa Rosa provides life-changing speech and language therapy services to children ages 3-13 in Santa Rosa and Petaluma who have communication disorders, with no required fees to their families, thanks to the generocity of our donors and grants. Our goal is to ensure that every child in our area has the communication skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. SERVICES PROVIDED Complete diagnostic speech-language evaluations One-on-one or small group therapy sessions Session observation and home activities for parents Disorders Evaluated and Treated • Articulation – Errors in the production of speech sounds. The child may substitute, delete, add, or change sounds (saying “wabbit” for “rabbit” or a lisp). • Phonology – Patterns of sound errors. The child may delete one sound from a consonant cluster (saying “poon” for “spoon” and “back” for “black” or substitute all sounds made in the back of the mouth for those in the front of the mouth (saying “tup” for “cup”). • Stuttering – Disruptions in the fluency of speech. The child may use repetitions of words, parts of words, or prolongations of sounds. • Childhood Apraxia of Speech – Motor speech disorder. The child knows what he/she wants to say, but his/her brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements needed, the child has problems saying sounds, syllables, and words. • Expressive Language – Difficulty using spoken language to express thoughts. The child may have trouble naming objects/pictures, putting words into sentences, having conversations, or using proper grammar. • Receptive Language – Difficulty understanding what is said. The child may have trouble following directions, understanding questions, or identifying objects/pictures. Speech-Language Pathologist Susan Tche, M.S., CCC-SLP Susan has been serving children and their families as a speech-language pathologist in the Bay Area for over ten years. She takes joy in helping children with speech and language challenges improve their communication skills through meaningful and engaging therapy sessions. As both a clinician and a mother of two young children, she values the power of play and tailors her sessions to each child’s interests to foster engagement for successful therapy outcomes. Susan has worked in private practice, public schools, and early childhood programs, serving toddlers through middle school-aged children. As a bilingual speech-language pathologist who speaks English and Vietnamese, Susan recognizes the importance of culturally responsive evaluation and treatment. In addition to providing comprehensive speech and language evaluations, Susan has provided therapy to address a range of communication disorders including language delays, expressive and receptive language disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, articulation and phonological disorders, and speech fluency. She is also trained in PROMPT therapy to support motor-based speech needs. Susan received her Master of Science in Communicative Disorders from San Francisco State University and holds a Bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley, where she was a Regents' and Chancellor's Scholar. She is licensed in California and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA.
